Philippe Clement explains Rangers half-time double substitution amid injury fears

Philippe Clement has claimed both Todd Cantwell and Nicolas Raskin were subbed off as injury precautions in the win over Hibs.

Todd Cantwell had scored Rangers’ second goal of the game but moments before the strike appeared to have pulled his groin.

Nicolas Raskin’s half-time substitution was a greater surprise with the midfielder only just returning to the first team after a lengthy layoff.

Philippe Clement was asked about the injury situation with the two players come full time and claimed that the subs were just a precaution.

Rangers are about to head into a hectic two game a week schedule and it’s clear the manager is not willing to risk any more issues.

“It’s too fast to assess that,” Clement told the press after the 3-0 victory. “But it looks OK for the moment.

“So I hope tomorrow also. After that he made a really good goal but I didn’t want to take any risk with those things.

“Same with Nico (Raskin), his foot was sleeping. We thought it was because of the tape, we took the tape out but he had still the same sensation.

“So you cannot play on one foot, that’s why I made the two changes at half-time already.”

Rangers injury precaution

Injuries have plagued Rangers all season long with the club set to be without five first teamers for the foreseeable future.

With Ben Davies, Kieran Dowell, Abdallah Sima, Danilo, and Kemar Roofe all out as things stand, it’s over £20m worth of talent which isn’t contributing.

Both Todd Cantwell and Nicolas Raskin are considered important members of the squad and fresh absences would pile on the injury pressure.

Fans will hope that Clement’s decision to hook both players as a precaution pays off as Rangers look to mount a challenge on three fronts.
