Rangers took on Aberdeen tonight in a Scottish football heavyweight battle but there was another happening in the Sky Sports studios between Kris Boyd and Chris Sutton.
Compared to Monday Night Football, the SPFL’s leads pundits rarely offer anything other than pantomime punditry and tonight was no different.
Former Rangers star Kris Boyd makes sense at this game as does ex-Aberdeen keeper Joe Lewis, however, Chris Sutton’s presence was purely to provoke because he certainly doesn’t give insightful tactical analysis – not that Boyd was taking any of his nonsense.

Kris Boyd pockets Chris Sutton – again
Before the first whistle had even been blown, Sutton was at it as Gers boss Philippe Clement fired his squad up for the win on an eventful night.
The former Celtic striker is obviously allowed back into Ibrox, not that he has shown any gratitude or been magnanimous, but it was a conversation about Lewis’ current situation that took a funny turn.
When asked by host Eilidh Barbour about training with Man Utd and keeping fit, Sutton was quick to say:
“Any fitness tips for Kris?”
As sharp as always, Boyd quipped:
“Wear black!”
Scottish football is unique and is made by games like Rangers v Aberdeen but for all that Boyd and Sutton clearly enjoy taking the mick out of each other, it doesn’t really bring anything to the quality of the coverage.
The analysis on offer for Monday Night Football is a perfect comparison, so is Match of the Day.
Yes, they have a laugh at each others expense, usually as a result of respective playing careers, but they still provide a a valuable option and offer something that the “normal” football fan maybe wouldn’t see.
The Scottish game is being left behind and for all that Sky are valued partners of the game, financially and in terms of the product being offered, the stakeholders really should be demanding more.
We will never see the billions that the Premier League does, but at least treat the armchair fans north of the border with the same respect.
