Ross County goalkeeper George Wickens had the “evening of his life” against Rangers to smash the record for the most saves made in a Scottish Premiership match.
The young English goalkeeper, 22, is on loan from Fulham and made a quite remarkable 19 saves in the game, which according to BBC reporter Liam MacLeod is a record.
It signifies what was an extraordinary evening at Ibrox where Rangers drew level on points with Celtic at the top of the Scottish Premiership but couldn’t find the extra goal which would’ve taken them top.
So much of that was about the performance of George Wickens, who was on tremendous form to keep Rangers at bay even if the Ross County goalkeeper was to eventually concede three.
Philippe Clement hails Ross County goalkeeper
Speaking after the 3-1 Scottish Premiership victory, Rangers manager Philippe Clement heaped praise on George Wickens.
Claiming that luck was on the side of the stopper, the Rangers boss claimed that the Ross County goalkeeper had the “evening of his life”.
“We had wave after wave of attacks, good possession play, good runs together, good tempo, good shot,” said Clement.
“But we had a goalkeeper also on the other side maybe had the evening of his life and a few times luck also on his side.
“So it could’ve been much more today but of course as a manager you need to be happy, although I’m not so fast happy, with the 3-1 victory because I cannot ask more of my players than what they are doing now.”
George Wickens impresses v Rangers
It’s not every day that you break the Scottish Premiership saves record so kudos to Ross County goalkeeper George Wickens.
The young Fulham goalkeeper joined Ross County on loan until the end of the season in January and is only in the side due to an injury to number one Ross Laidlaw.

Having only played at English National League level up until the stint with Ross County, the 22-year-old deserves huge credit for standing up in a ferocious Ibrox.
With Rangers getting a quite remarkable 23 shots on target in the match, and 43 shots in total, perhaps the performance of George Wickens simply highlights the erratic nature of the clash at Ibrox.
