James Tavernier and Fenerbahce aren’t two that you would often pair together, but the latter is reportedly interested in the former.
Tavernier is constantly the source of much speculation at this time of year. Turkish media outlet Fotosport, however, have claimed that this time it’s Fenerbahce who want the Rangers captain.
It’s been another consistent season from the right-back. Steven Gerrard came in and immediately entrusted Tavernier from the off as his captain and leader. So much so that he’s featured in every single game for Rangers this season. That’s 35 outings in total overall.
Last summer, it was West Brom chasing the Englishman. Constant rumours led to bids being rejected by Rangers for their key-man. That was then followed up by a new contract for Tavernier, who’s now tied to the club until 2022.
Fenerbahce are looking for two new full-backs, and couldn’t go wrong with Tavernier. You have to wonder, however, just how much Rangers are going to want for him. He’s been probably the most consistent performer at the club all season, and always speaks of his desire to stay longer.
Rangers hold all the aces
The aces are very much with the club should the Turkish giants come calling. The likes of West Brom and Brighton may also renew their interest if they fear he may end up elsewhere.
Regardless, Gerrard isn’t likely to worry too much about the speculation. Despite saying in the past that all Rangers players are up for sale, he’s only concerned in picking up top dollar for them.
Tavernier is one of those key players who’ll consistently have interest in him. Fenerbahce have yet to make a formal offer to Rangers. The closer we get to January, however, the more we’ll start to hear about more firm interest.
Rangers only have Jon Flanagan for cover at right-back. Should worse come to worst and Rangers do ever let their captain go, a replacement would be essential.
Despite Flanagan’s natural position being the right, his unconvincing performances down the other side mean that it would be dangerous to promote him with no competition.
For now, it’ll be interesting to see whether the Turkish giants try to make a formal offer.
