There were a number of talking points as Rangers suffered a 3-2 defeat at Ibrox to Motherwell in the Scottish Premiership.

Danny Rohl watched his side get outplayed by Motherwell on Sunday, and that dented their hopes of winning the title.

They are now four points off the top of the SPFL table and find themselves in third place behind Hearts and Celtic.

Will Rangers sack Danny Rohl if they fail to win the league?

If he goes, who would be a good replacement for him?

Mark Clattenburg believes Rangers should have received a penalty

Mark Clattenburg, a former FIFA and Premier League official, believes that Rangers were hard done by not getting a penalty in the first half of the game.

Lukas Fadinger fouled Djeidi Gassama, which was deemed a foul outside the penalty area by Kevin Clancy.

However, on analysing the clips released by Sky Sports, Clattenburg claims that the contact that created the foul started inside the penalty area.

In his view, the VAR should have sent Clancy to the monitor to review his decision, which he likely would have changed.

While the former Premier League referee understands the decision, looking at it from multiple angles would have aided the on-field referee, and that option was wrongly not handed to him.

Speaking exclusively to Rangers News, Clattenburg said: “I think Rangers were unlucky not to get a penalty kick for a foul by Motherwell’s Lukas Fadinger on Rangers’ Djeidi Gassama.

“The contact that created the foul started just inside the penalty area, and the VAR should have recommended a review.

“I can understand the initial call of the referee to award it outside as he may have had a doubt, but replays show the contact starts inside the penalty area, so a penalty kick should have been awarded.”

How Danny Rohl reacted to the incident

Rohl stated that the foul was clearly inside the penalty area, but claims that the officials did not bother to look at it properly.

He also admitted that a lot of the 50-50 calls went Motherwell’s way, and that is what eventually cost his team the game.

Rangers did have a few decent chances to add more goals, but were never truly in control of proceedings.

The German said: “The foul clearly on the line. His foot is inside, but they didn’t look.

“Maybe I’m wrong, but please look back and you’ll see I’m right with this.

“In some moments, you felt the 50-50 situation was a little bit on the Motherwell side, and this is also football.

“But I don’t want to make excuses, we still had enough chances to turn the game.”
