Youssef Chermiti was involved in a controversial moment as Rangers shared the spoils with Motherwell at Fir Park.

Danny Rohl opted to start the Portuguese striker ahead of Ryan Naderi and Bojan Miovski in what was a must-win SPFL game.

Nicolas Raskin gave Rangers an early lead, but despite being a man down, Motherwell equalised late on via a goal from Stephen Welsh.

Mark Clattenburg responds to Youssef Chermiti penalty claims

Mark Clattenburg reviewed the footage from multiple angles as Chermiti went to the ground inside the Motherwell penalty area.

The Rangers striker was sandwiched between two Motherwell players and could not stay on his feet.

Elliott Watt was behind the forward and Paul McGinn was in front of him, with the Gers player having eyes only for the ball.

Watt’s infringement prevented him from getting to the ball, and that saw the visitors appeal for a penalty, which was waved off by Steven McLean.

While Rohl may feel hard done by with the decision, Clattenburg believes that the on-field referee got this one correct.

In his view, there was contact, but it was not enough for Chermiti to go down, and a penalty could not be awarded for that.

Clattenburg, a former FIFA and Premier League official, told Rangers News exclusively: “Rangers demand a penalty when Youssef Chermiti went down under a challenge from Elliott Watt.

“There was a contact, but I am not convinced that was enough contact for him to go down.

“I understand the referee’s decision to play on, and for sure, this would not be on VAR to make an intervention.”

Danny Rohl must take the blame for Rangers dropping points

Rohl saw his side struggle to get a hold of the game after taking the lead, but they did not concede a goal in the first half.

At the break, he should have made changes in order to give his side a better chance of grabbing the match by the scruff of its neck.

He failed to do that, and even after Motherwell were a man down, the German did not instruct his players to go out in search of another goal.

Instead, they sat back, absorbed pressure and eventually succumbed to it.

Rangers will not be able to win the title if they fail to deal with these situations in-game in the coming months.
