Chris Sutton has delivered his verdict on both Rangers and Celtic not releasing statements after the Scottish Cup quarter-final.

Celtic fans stormed the Ibrox pitch following their side’s penalty shootout victory on Sunday, which was followed by the Gers fans also getting onto the pitch.

Things got ugly and nine arrests have been made for vandalism and violence, and the Old Firm clash has made national news over the past few days.

Chris Sutton believes both Rangers and Celtic do not want to go first

Sutton is of the view that both sides are waiting for each other to go first with the statement condemning fans and potentially the authorities.

This would give the other team a chance to respond to it and potentially clap back if they have been targeted in the statement.

However, the former Celtic striker has admitted that it was shameful and embarrassing for both sets of fans.

It is understood that hundreds of thousands of pounds worth of damage was caused at Ibrox, which will now be borne by the Gers.

Sutton told the Daily Record: “It was shameful and embarrassing.

“This was a big disappointment, really, and it will be interesting to see what happens next. It looks like both clubs will release some sort of statement.

“It looks like a waiting game at this moment in time for whoever releases it first and the other one wants to react.

“On both sides there was behaviour which was unacceptable inside a football ground.”

Rangers control their social media activity amid fan backlash

Both sets of fans are asking for accountability from their respective clubs as they want to ensure that their safety is considered whenever they go to football games.

Due to this, they have been asking their clubs to issue statements.

Rangers tweeted about an Ibrox tour on Wednesday, but quickly deleted it as they completely failed to read the room and were rightly called out by their supporters.

Since then, their social media posts have been very restricted as they are only making selective posts, particularly with regard to birthdays of current and former players.
