Last Wednesday, against Aberdeen, Alfredo Morelos had an opportunity to write himself into Rangers folklore.

Had he scored in an eighth successive league match, he would have broken the SPFL record. Instead, his night ended in ignominy. Sent off with half an hour to play, without him, his team eventually succumbed to defeat.

This evening, he has a chance to put it all right.

A winning goal in Vienna would ensure previous missed opportunities and suspensions would be near forgotten.

He enjoyed playing against this opposition at Ibrox, too. The Colombian scored twice and won the penalty that his captain, James Tavernier converted, ensuring he played a major part in all three goals.

Consequently, El Buffalo will be the man Rapid most fear ahead of tonight. While he must be careful not to let the occasion fire him up too much, recent dismissals shouldn’t discourage him from bringing the same bullish confidence as always.

He is the main man, and it’s up to him to find a route to goal.

Yes, the service needs to be good. However, a chance or two is always going to fall his way over the course of 90 minutes.

Rangers fans will hope that when those opportunities fall his way, he can convert.

Alfredo better have brought his shooting boots with him, Rangers’ European dream depends on it.
