Ex-Celtic striker Frank McAvennie joins Chris Sutton in fuming over a Rangers penalty “disgrace” v Livingston which wasn’t overturned by VAR.
Both former Parkhead stars love a good groan when it comes to the referees and Rangers and in the aftermath of the Ibrox side’s 2-0 win in East Lothian they’ve stayed true to form.
In a controversial Scottish Premiership clash, Rangers were awarded two penalties with the first coming through young Northern Irish winger Ross McCausland.
Handed a first start for the side after a string of impressive cameos, referee Steven McLean controversially adjudged Livingston keeper Shamal George to have fouled the winger in the box.
Replays showed that the 20-year-old did go to ground very easily, even if there was contact on his feet, and James Tavernier would go on to miss the spot kick.
But that didn’t stop Frank McAvennie fuming over the incident with the former Celtic striker branding the Rangers penalty call a “disgrace” on the platform formerly known as Twitter.
“That’s a disgrace, VAR at its best again, no contact at all , justice done,” said McAvennie.
Chris Sutton joins Frank McAvennie to criticise Rangers penalty call
The comments of Frank McAvennie on the Rangers penalty call came as fellow outspoken ex-Celtic striker Chris Sutton took aim at Ross McCausland at half-time in the clash.
Speaking on Sky Sports’ live coverage of the match, Chris Sutton claimed that the young winger should’ve been carded for the incident.
“It’s a clear dive,” said Sutton. “I do not understand how the VAR official isn’t talking to the referee. He goes down so early.

“He’s already on his way down McCausland, who had a good first half and has been a threat, but that is a dive and he should be cautioned.”
Under-fire Rangers striker Cyriel Dessers would go on to give the Gers a first-half lead at the Tony Macaroni Arena before James Tavernier dispatched a second penalty in the second period.
Rangers were awarded another spot-kick when Mikey Devlin’s raised arm caught the ball with the Ibrox skipper netting his 11th of the season to secure the points.
Ross McCausland was also at the centre of more VAR controversy when he had a goal softly ruled out due to an apparent shove from Abdallah Sima in the build up.
