Rangers travel to Kilmarnock on Sunday for the final game of the season, with limited options in defence.
Flanagan’s absence is a blow. Initially, though, in our predicted XI, we suggested Borna Barisic would step in as a replacement.
However, in so doing, we overlooked comments made by the star back in early March [Daily Record].
He confirmed then, that he would no longer play on artificial surfaces. The Rangers medical team had advised him that it would be unwise based on the nature of previous injuries.
That rules him out of playing at multiple venues in the SPL, including the Tony Macaroni Arena, New Douglas Park and of course, Killie’s home ground, Rugby Park.
Therefore, it looks as though Andy Halliday will start at left-back on Sunday.
Lee Wallace is of course also technically available. Yet, having played a grand total of 52 minutes under Steven Gerrard this season [Transfermarkt], he isn’t really a viable option to start the match.
With three first-team defenders on the sidelines, the manager’s resources are stretched. Given the form Rangers are in right now, though, they should still have enough to end the season on a high.
