Rangers goalkeeper Jon McLaughlin is set to be dropped for Sunday’s Premiership clash against Hibernian despite his remarkable record between the sticks since joining the club in the summer.
McLaughlin made his first Gers appearance of 2021 last weekend and kept a clean sheet in the 4-0 Scottish Cup third-round triumph over Cove Rangers.
He had next to nothing to do in the game, with the Gers dominating possession and the opportunities in both halves.
However, earlier in the campaign, he proved that he’s more than capable of producing when called upon and his statistics since his move to Ibrox are remarkable [Transfermarkt].
The 33-year-old has now represented the Gers twelve times and has kept an incredible eleven clean sheets.
The only goals he has conceded came in a 2-2 draw at Hibernian in September, with Drey Wright and Christian Doidge finding the net.
Yet, it’s highly unlikely that the ex-Hearts and Sunderland star will be given a second chance against the capital club at the weekend, with Allan McGregor set to return to the side following a rare rest.
McGregor recently signed a contract extension and has been outstanding this season, ensuring that despite McLaughlin’s near-flawless record, the 39-year-old is still very much Steven Gerrard’s no.1 keeper.
Scotland international McLaughlin will have been grateful for the long-awaited playing time he received last weekend, but he’ll almost certainly be back amongst the substitutes at Ibrox on Sunday, as the Gers look for their 17th home win of the season.
