Rangers are down to the bare bones defensively ahead of the club’s clash with Danish Champions Brondby as the club prepare with only two centre-backs.

With Filip Helander out until December and Jack Simpson unregistered in European competition we’re expecting to see Leon Balogun and Connor Goldson to start in a match being labelled a “must win” by Steven Gerrard.

The defensive situation at the club has been well-documented and Leon Balogun in particular will be expected to play through the pain barrier with a second 90 minutes in a matter of days.

Left-back Calvin Bassey was utilised at centre-back in the club’s last match against Sparta Prague and was certainly an unconvincing option at this level in what is an unorthodox position for the defender.

This time around Rangers will have a more recognisable defensive partnership in Goldson and Balogun who’ll be relied on to steer the side to three points at Ibrox.

Rangers are without a win from their opening two Europa League games and Steven Gerrard believes the club need a victory against Brondby if they harbour hopes to get out of the groups.

That’s a view echoed by vice-captain Connor Goldson who has branded he match a “must-win”.

“It’s a massive game for us, it’s a must-win,” said Goldson [Rangers].

“Obviously the first two games haven’t gone to plan and if we want to keep playing in Europe after Christmas then this game is a must-win.

“We’re at Ibrox, we’ve already lost one of our home games, so we need to now go on a run in the group and that starts tomorrow.”

Rangers boss Steven Gerrard has also been giving an injury update ahead of the clash as he touches base on a key player yet to be seen this season.
