Tommy Conway earns late Euro 2024 call as Rangers-linked hitman answers injury prayers

Rangers-linked Bristol City striker Tommy Conway probably had one eye on a beach in Spain rather than a stadium in Germany this summer.

The 12-goal striker impressed in the Championship last season and may well have been looking for some well-earned R&R after helping his side to a mid-table finish.

But when country calls it’s your duty to answer and the Scotland U21 international has just earned a shock call-up to the country’s preliminary Euro 2024 squad.

Whilst the circumstances are not exactly the most positive, Scotland will hope to harness the same finishing talent which saw Tommy Conway down West Ham in the FA Cup this season.

Conway earns Scotland injury call

Rangers fans might remember Tommy Conway being linked to the club earlier in the season.

The form of the Robins forward was said to have turned heads at Ibrox in January, with Premier League clubs and even Old Firm rivals Celtic mentioned.

Whilst Rangers look to be moving away from the English Football League market, a world of inflated transfer fees and wages, the links to Conway ensure an Ibrox eye will be kept on his progress.

Now, Steve Clarke has taken the decision to call Tommy Conway up to his Scotland squad as injury devastates the Tartan Army’s forward line.

Whilst the call for Conway comes after Liverpool talent Ben Doaks pulled out with injury, Australian-born target man forward Lyndon Dykes is also officially out of the tournament.

Steve Clarke has admitted the situation has ‘spooked’ the nation.

A stuttering 2-0 win over lowly Gibraltar has done little to ease the nerves and now Conway will bolster the squad.

Scotland still have the likes of Southampton forward Che Adams and Hearts talisman Lawrence Shankland in their ranks.

But with Lyndon Dykes very much the first-choice focal point there’s now room for a new hero to be born in Germany.

Rangers could have two Scotland Euro 2024 stars

Rangers only have one official representative at Euro 2024 with Scotland.

Centre-back John Souttar is the only player officially flying the Ibrox flag and the defender missed the tense victory in Portugal.

Ex-Gers academy talent Ross McCrorie – a teammate of Tommy Conway’s at Bristol City – also started the match at right-back amid a dearth of options in the position due to injury.

The squad also contains ex-Rangers goalkeeper Liam Kelly – who has been linked with a return to the club – and former academy wonderkid Billy Gilmour.

Ryan Jack, who has just been released by Rangers, is also in the squad and even came off the bench v Gibraltar despite not kicking a ball for the club since February.
