Rangers winger Glenn Middleton bags hat-trick of assists for Scotland U21s

Rangers winger Glenn Middleton bagged a hat-trick of assists in a stunning display for Scotland U21s against San Marino on Tuesday.

Scot Gemmill’s side won 7-0 in Serravalle and Middleton was key to the hammering.

The 20-year-old started on the left-wing and saw his side go 2-0 up through goals from Fraser Hornby and David Turnbull.

His first key involvement then came on the stroke of half-time, when he sprinted down his flank before cutting the ball back for Barry Maguire, who finished well from just inside the box.

Middleton turned provider again for Scotland’s fourth goal shortly after the interval with a measured cross which was converted from close range by Hornby before he completed a hat-trick of assists by unselfishly squaring for Connor McLennan to make it six in the 70th minute following a brilliant solo run.

It was an all-action display from the wide man who also played a key part in the build-up to Scotland’s fifth goal as well as going close with an effort from distance in the second half.

While the opposition was weak, it was a reminder of the ex-Norwich City youth’s talent as he continues to be overlooked at club level.

Middleton travelled with the Rangers squad to their pre-season tournament in France, but since the campaign began in August, he hasn’t made a single matchday squad, with his only chances to impress on the pitch coming in B team matches.

Young Rangers centre-back, Lewis Mayo, who is currently on loan at Dunfermline, also played the full match, while Kieran Wright and Stephen Kelly made substitute appearances.
