Rangers star Calvin Bassey took part in a key training session on Tuesday as a potential international debut for Nigeria beckons.
The 21-year-old joined the Gers in June 2020 from Leicester City U23s with no experience of senior football.
However, he’s now playing an increasingly important role in the first team, racking up eight appearances already this season and often being selected ahead of Borna Barisic.
He’s shown an ability to contribute at both ends of the pitch and his good form recently led to a maiden international call-up.
Bassey is eligible for Italy, England and Nigeria but has chosen the Super Eagles and if he features in either of their two World Cup qualifiers against the Central African Republic over the coming days, he’ll be cap-tied to the West African nation.
On Tuesday, two days out from the first meeting with CAR, Bassey took part in a key training session at the Teslim Balogun Stadium.
The squad was split into two XIs and according to All Nigeria Soccer, Bassey was named in ‘Team B’, suggesting that he’s behind Jamilu Collins of SC Paderborn in the pecking order.
However, that’s far from a guarantee that he won’t feature in either game, as he may have done enough during the session to move ahead of Collins or he could be used as an impact player from the bench.
Bassey’s Rangers teammates Leon Balogun and Joe Aribo, who are both currently in good form, were reportedly named in ‘Team A’ and are likely to start both matches.
