A former Northern Ireland international has taken aim at Steven Davis after the midfielder gave away a penalty against Kosovo.

Iain Dowie, who earned 59 caps for the Ulstermen, unloaded on veteran midfielder Davo after he clumsily fouled Milot Rashica in the opening 10 minutes.

Despite Davis’ wonderful contribution to Northern Ireland over the years, where the Rangers star has made a British record 134 caps, Iain Dowie took aim at the 37-year-old’s age.

Claiming that “time catches up”, it was an extreme response from Dowie as Northern Ireland toiled in Eastern Europe.

“I don’t know what Steven Davis is doing,” said Dowie [Premier Sports].

“You can tell now, he thinks he can get there. I’m not being funny, he’s been immense for Northern Ireland but time catches up and you look at Rashica, very sharp, he buys the penalty.

“The worst possible start for Northern Ireland.”

Northern Ireland toil v Kosovo as Rangers star slaughtered

OK so it was a bad challenge but we’re not entirely convinced Steven Davis deserved such disgraceful commentary from Iain Dowie.

The Ulster captain has been a monumental figure for club and country and as Davo proved In the latter part of the season, he still has plenty to contribute to both.

But the frustration is evident with Northern Ireland as they toil in their opening Nations League games, taking one point from a possible six.

Drawing 0-0 with Cyprus in their opener, Ian Baraclough’s side fell to a 3-2 defeat against Kosovo with Steven Davis’ mistake contributing to the defeat.

Vedar Muriqi scored twice for Kosovo with Zymer Bytyqi getting the nation’s third, whilst Sean Lavery and Daniel Ballard scored for Northern Ireland.

Meanwhile, an in-demand Rangers star has finally gotten some of the recognition he deserves in Scotland.
