Rangers star dropped by Nigeria as Gernot Rohr confirms Celtic request

Rangers star Calvin Bassey has been dropped by the Nigeria national team and manager Gernot Rohr for the next round of World Cup Qualifiers and will need to wait for his Super Eagles debut.

The Italian-born 21-year-old left-back is highly-rated by Rangers and his strong form this season earned the player a call-up to the Nigeria squad in the last round of fixtures.

However, the ex-Leicester City kid failed to make an appearance despite the call-up and this time around will miss the Qatar 2022 qualifying clashes with Liberia and the Cape Verde Islands.

RONALDO NEEDS TO STOP WHINING.

Rangers stars Leon Balogun and Joe Aribo – at this stage Nigeria stalwarts – have once again made Rohr’s squad.

The big news from the German coach’s selection concerns the inclusion of ex-Watford and Man United striker Odion Ighalo, with hopes the Al-Shabab striker will permanently come out of retirement.

Porto star Zaidu Sanusi and Paderborn’s Jamilu Collins are the preferred left-backs in the squad, and you can view the full list HERE.

Rangers have called Nigeria coach Gernot Rohr to discuss AFCON22 plans

Nigeria coach Rohr has also been taking about the Super Eagles’ African Cup of Nations ambitions and revealed that Rangers are involved in the discussions.

FIFA rules state that international federations can expect their players to report for international duty for the tournament by the 27th of December.

Rangers have a crunch Old Firm clash with Celtic on the 2nd of January and Rohr revealed the club has already been in touch to discuss an extension.

“We need a good preparation, we need the players at least ten days before but like you know in England they play,” Rohr said to Elegbete TV Sports.

“Somebody called me from Glasgow already they have the derby Glasgow Rangers vs Celtic on the second or third of January if we can let the players play.

“We have a lot of problems to prepare the team but I think we will have most of our players at least ten days before.”

Rangers centre-back Leon Balogun has 41 caps and one goal for the Nigerian national team whilst midfielder Joe Aribo has 12 caps and two goals for the Super Eagles.

Rangers have a new African hero on their books and whilst he might not be Nigerian, alongside a £41m Premier League duo he has the hopes of millions on his shoulders.
