Rangers star Alfredo Morelos is finally set to return to Ibrox after Colombia ended their Copa America campaign on a high.

The South Americans pipped Peru in dramatic fashion by netting a last-minute winner and coming from behind to win 3-2 in the competition’s third-place playoff.

Morelos, 25 was recalled to the squad for the clash with the Peruvians but once again failed to get any minutes for Los Cafeteros.

This means the striker played only once for his country at the tournament; coincidentally a 2-1 defeat to Peru in the competition’s group stages.

The match was won by FC Porto forward Luis Diaz, who scored a double to down Peru after Yoshimar Yotun had put Peru ahead just before half-time.

Minutes after the restart Juan Cuadrado had Colombia level before Diaz poked the nation’s nose in front with around 25 minutes to go.

As the game entered its final stages, Gianluca Lapadula had equalised for Peru to make it 2-2 but Diaz popped up to net the eventual winner.

Morelos’ preparations for the Copa America were affected by a positive Covid-19 test which saw him miss the country’s two World Cup Qualifiers before the tournament.

These had served as warm-up games and it is not clear how badly the virus affected Alfie or slowed him down heading into the tournament.

The player will now return to Glasgow following a short break with family and Rangers boss Steven Gerrard has already said he is eager to get Morelos up to speed as quickly as possible.

Alfredo’s time in Brazil for the tournament has also been dominated by reports linking the player to FC Porto, but there are conflicting reports regarding the interest.

Whilst talk of a bid being launched has been quashed, one ex-Gers skipper believes that a move to the Portuguese giants is “not even on the table”.
