Rangers player Jon McLaughlin was snubbed once again by Scotland boss Steve Clarke on Wednesday as his bleak start to 2021 continues.

Ahead of Scotland’s final World Cup Qualifier of three in a hectic international block, McLaughlin’s hopes of a third senior cap were raised.

Steve Clarke hinted that he could make a change in goal for the clash against the Faroe Islands at Hampden on Wednesday night [Scotsman], with McLaughlin one of two contenders to replace David Marshall.

However, even though a change was made, McLaughlin was overlooked, with Hearts keeper Craig Gordon given the nod.

Gordon grabbed his opportunity, too, making a couple of impressive stops and keeping a clean sheet as Scotland secured their first three points in Group F with a 4-0 win.

It’s now clear that McLaughlin is the third choice at international level to go alongside his backup status at Ibrox.

The 33-year-old had a fair idea that he would have to play second fiddle to Allan McGregor when he signed for Rangers but he must be growing increasingly frustrated with his lack of game time.

Despite showing that he was highly capable with a string of Premiership clean sheets at the start of the season, the former Hearts and Sunderland star hasn’t featured at all for club or country in 2021.

Meanwhile, an SPFL club have aimed an April Fool’s Day dig at Rangers and Celtic.
