Rangers star Steven Davis has left the Northern Ireland camp on the eve of a Nations League fixture [Northern Ireland].
Davis played the full 120 minutes of his country’s gut-wrenching Euro 2020 playoff final defeat to Slovakia last week, before making a substitute appearance in the 2-1 Nations League defeat to Austria on Sunday night.
However, he will play no part in Wednesday’s clash against Romania at Windsor Park.
Northern Ireland released a statement on Tuesday morning, explaining that the midfielder had left the camp for ‘personal reasons’ [Irishfa.com].
35-year-old Davis recently became Northern Ireland’s most-capped player of all-time and has shown remarkable commitment across the 15 years since making his international debut against Canada in 2005.
He’s also been a key performer for Steven Gerrard since returning for a second spell at Ibrox in January 2019.
Davis initially joined on loan from Southampton before signing a permanent deal that summer, and he’s currently under contract until June 2021.
Given that he has withdrawn from international duty less than a week before Rangers return to Premiership action against Aberdeen at Ibrox, he is now a doubt for that game.
