Rangers midfielder Bongani Zungu has hit back on Twitter following a wave of criticism from South Africa fans.

The backlash from Bafana Bafana supporters comes in the wake of back-to-back Africa Cup of Nations qualifying fixtures against minnows São Tomé e Príncipe.

Zungu came off the bench and scored a header as South Africa won the first game 2-0 before playing the full 90 minutes in a 4-2 win on Monday.

The wins secured six points which took Molefi Ntseki’s side level with Group C leaders, Ghana, although they have played a game more than their rivals.

Yet, there are 110 places between South Africa and São Tomé in the FIFA World Rankings and especially given that both matches took place on home soil, the supporters expected more.

The first game was in the balance until Zungu’s 90th-minute header, while the hosts even trailed early on in Monday’s fixture, with the opposition scoring their first goals of the entire campaign.

It seems the Gers midfielder wasn’t impressed by the criticism, though, and he’s taken to Twitter to hit back.

Bongani Zungu hits out at South Africa critics – Verdict

It’s easy to see both sides of the argument here.

Given that São Tomé are one of the lowest-ranked teams in international football, South Africa fans are entitled to expect more comprehensive victories, especially in competitive fixtures.

Yet, at the same time, Zungu and co. did collect the six points that were on offer and now sit in a strong position with only two qualifying fixtures remaining.

Hitting out at supporters on social media is rarely a beneficial exercise, though, and judging by some of the responses he has received so far, it’ll take a lot more than a tweet to convince South Africa fans that all is well with the national team.
