As Rangers continued their hunt for a midfielder last season, Genk star Patrik Hrošovský was one of the main names linked with a move to Ibrox.

Czech outlet iSport claimed back in September 2020 that the Gers were pursuing a loan-to-buy move for the former Viktoria Plzen star.

However, reports coming out of Belgium would later claim that Genk only wanted to sell the defensive midfielder – who is a former Ianis Hagi teammate – to the tune of £3.5m [Walfoot].

Rangers would instead opt for a loan-with-option-to-buy move for South Africa international Bongani Zungu but that wouldn’t work out with the Amiens midfielder now back in France.

However, any Rangers supporters tuning into Euro 2020 would’ve noticed Hrošovský coming off the bench in Slovakia’s surprise 2-1 victory over Poland in Group E.

Hrošovský, 29, came off the bench as Slovakia earned an important three points courtesy of a Wojciech Szczęsny own goal and a Milan Škriniar effort.

Karol Linetty had equalised for match favourites Poland just a minute into the restart but Grzegorz Krychowiak’s second yellow card turned the match on in Slovakia’s favour.

Patrik Hrošovský earned his 34th Slovak cap in the match and he will be hoping to continue to have an impact for the side as they prepare to face Sweden and Spain.

The other two sides in the group played out a 0-0 draw in Sevilla as a wasteful Spanish side were held by the Scandinavians, who also had opportunities to win the game.

Rangers continue their well-publicised hunt for midfield reinforcements this summer but there has been no suggestion that the club could return for Hrošovský this season.

Perhaps the midfielder’s 10-minute cameo in the Krestovsky Stadium might have Ibrox eyes back on the Slovakia international.

Whilst Rangers remain in the hunt for midfield reinforcements, one current Ibrox midfield star is reportedly attracting interest from Premier League giants down south.
