Rangers fans get flashbacks as £8m ex-Ger Kevin Mbabu makes Euros appearance

Rangers fans tuning into Wales’ Euro 2020 opener against Switzerland got a reminder of darker days at Ibrox as Kevin Mbabu took to the field for the match.

The Swiss right-back was one of the Newcastle Five who joined Rangers back in 2015 but, let alone even play for the club, never once made the bench the Gers.

Mbabu, now 26, joined Rangers in the January of 2015 from Newcastle United alongside Shane Ferguson, Gael Bigirimana, Haris Vučkić and fellow defender Remie Streete.

Whilst Streete has now retired from football, Mbabu’s career has taken a decidedly different turn.

The defender would return to Newcastle United following his Rangers loan but struggled to break into the St. James’ Park first team.

Mbabu only played three games across his entire four year Newcastle career before being farmed out on loan to Swiss side BSC Young Boys.

The right-back’s success with the Swiss club earned him a permanent move and Mbabu was eventually part of the 17/18 title-winning side, the first squad to claim the Swiss title for Young Boys in 32 years.

This earned Mbabu an £8m move to Bundesliga side VfL Wolfsburg where he continues with his football to this day.

The match against Wales was Mbabu’s 13th Switzerland cap and his presence on the pitch in Baku’s Olympic Stadium didn’t miss Gers supporters.

Rangers fans took to Twitter as they got a traumatic flashback to darker days at Ibrox:

Whilst Kevin Mbabu is no longer a Gers player, Rangers fans will look forward to seeing five of their own players at the tournament.
