Rangers duo Joe Aribo and Leon Balogun involved in spectacular Nigeria collapse

Joe Aribo and Leon Balogun featured as Nigeria collapsed spectacularly to draw 4-4 with Sierra Leone on Friday.

The Rangers duo were named in the starting XI by manager, Gernot Rohr, as the Super Eagles looked to continue their perfect start to Africa Cup of Nations qualifying.

The game kicked off at 4pm UK time at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium in Benin City and it didn’t take the hosts long to get into their work.

Everton winger, Alex Iwobi, opened the scoring just five minutes into the contest, and remarkably, it was 4-0 to Nigeria after just 31 minutes, with Victor Osimhen and Samuel Chukwueze getting on the scoresheet, while Iwobi bagged a second.

The game looked as good as done at that point, but Sierra Leone rallied as the hosts took their foot off the gas.

The visitors grabbed one back just prior to the interval but there was no real cause for concern at that point and the Super Eagles went close on a number of occasions early in the second half.

At the 65-minute mark, Rohr made a number of substitutions, with Balogun one of those to make way.

However, with the Gers centre-back off the field, things went south quickly, as the visitors scored in the 72nd, 81st and 86th minutes to snatch the most unlikely of points.

It’s a hugely disappointing result for Nigeria, who will have a chance to exact revenge when the two sides meet again in Freetown on Tuesday.
