Impressive reported Rangers target Salih Özcan won the European U21 Championship with Germany on Sunday as they defeated Portugal 1-0 in the final.

Last summer, the Gers, West Brom and Huddersfield Town were all linked with Özcan [Kölner Stadt Anzeiger] following an impressive loan spell with Holstein Kiel, but he opted to stay on at FC Koln.

He was rewarded with 32 first-team appearances across the 2020/21 season but is now out of contract and last week, Rangers were once again credited with interest [Kicker].

It would be a surprise if the midfielder has had time to think about his future, though, due to his recent workload.

In late May, when preparations for the final stages of the U21 Championships were already underway, he was helping Koln avoid relegation from the Bundesliga with a playoff win over his former loan club Kiel.

After completing that initial mission, he joined up with his international teammates as they attempted to win a third U21 Championship title for Germany.

Özcan didn’t feature in the quarter-final, but he forced his way into the side for the 2-1 semi-final win over the Netherlands and for the final against Portugal.

The Portuguese certainly held their own in Ljubjana in terms of possession, but it was the Germans who created more opportunities, and a 49th minute Lukas Nmecha goal decided the contest.

Özcan played 90 minutes on the left side of a midfield three before being substituted in injury time shortly after picking up a yellow card.

It’s a big achievement to win the U21 Euros and Özcan will no doubt still be celebrating alongside his teammates.

Once those festivities come to an end, though, it’ll be time for the 23-year-old – who featured in the Championships as an overage player – to sit down with his agent and discuss his future.

In other news, Rangers legend Ally McCoist has shared a brilliant story about the first time he met former Ibrox teammate Paul Gascoigne.
