Rangers boss Steven Gerrard will be cursing earlier transfer comments regarding his centre-backs as the club awaits more news on Nigeria international Leon Balogun.
The Ibrox centre-back could be the latest to join a disrupted Rangers backline which has had to cope with numerous absences throughout the season to date.
The normally ever-present Connor Goldson has missed games this season through Covid-19 isolations whilst Filip Helander is out until at least December.
Fourth choice centre-back Jack Simpson is yet to convince the Ibrox support that he’s up to the task at Rangers and hasn’t even been included in the club’s Europa League squad.
As a result Calvin Bassey was tossed into centre-back in the 1-0 away defeat to Sparta Prague.
This could come back to bite the Ibrox side if Balogun’s injury – for which he was substituted with 15 minutes to go in Nigeria’s 2-0 win over the Central African Republic – keeps him out for any length of time.
The Gers have a crunch Scottish Premiership clash with Hearts on the horizon whilst a must-win Europa League tie against Brondby at Ibrox follows it.
Steven Gerrard Rangers transfer line coming back to haunt him
Steven Gerrard will be immensely frustrated with any further injuries in defence with the Ibrox gaffer being unable to pick from his full complement all season long.
But many fans may point to the summer exits of two fringe players and comments made by Gerrard when quizzed on his six-strong backline earlier in the year.
George Edmundson (Ipswich) and Nikola Katic (loan to Hajduk Split) both left in the summer window and ever since Rangers have not had their problems to seek at centre-back.
As if destined, these come after Gerrard told reporters: “we have six centre backs at the moment but that won’t be the case in the summer” [Glasgow Times].
It’s a line that at the time many felt could come back to haunt the Rangers manager and as the club continues to amble through injury this season it’s one which sticks in the mind.
As the season reaches an important stage, fans will be hoping that these words are a curse in name only as the Ibrox defensive options prepare to be stretched yet again this season.
