Rangers winger Murphy admits at times he thought injury would end career

Jamie Murphy has opened up on his difficult comeback from injury, as quoted by the Scottish Sun.

The Gers star sustained serious knee ligament damage in a League Cup tie at Kilmarnock in August 2018 and only returned to competitive action for the club earlier this month against Hamilton.

He was given 25 minutes off the bench and settled in quickly. However, the £900k-rated winger [Transfermarkt] wasn’t always so sure his chance would come.

Rangers winger Murphy admits doubts over injury comeback

“At times I feared I wouldn’t come back,” he said, as quoted by the Scottish Sun. “There were a few points when I was out and you have a few niggles and you need to go back to see the surgeon and you think ‘I’m not coming back from this’.

“So it was brilliant just to get some minutes on the park against Accies.

“The manager was probably right in my first few months back to leave me out of the team. In my head, I thought I was the same, but I wasn’t. I feel like I am now at the levels I was before but I wasn’t earlier this season.”

Verdict

It’s been a long hard road back to the Rangers first team for Murphy who deserved the rousing reception he got when he took to the pitch earlier in the month.

Since he had last played for the club, the playing staff has changed markedly, and he’s now facing major competition in his preferred left-wing spot.

Ryan Kent, Sheyo Ojo, Brandon Barker and Jordan Jones have all been deployed there at some point this season.

Therefore, if he’s to build on his comeback appearance, he’ll need to show top-quality levels in training.

First and foremost, though, it’s great to see the bluenose back fit and healthy.
