Rangers winger Jones receives further injury boost

Jordan Jones is likely still kicking himself after a wild challenge during Sunday’s Old Firm defeat saw him pick up both a red card and an injury.

He faces a three-match suspension, but on the injury front, the diagnosis continues to improve.

Initially, it was suggested that he could face months or even the entire season on the sidelines with a significant injury [Scottish Sun].

However, on Wednesday, it was reported by the Daily Record, that he had only suffered a ‘minor medial ligament tear’, which would keep him out of action for four to six weeks.

Now, though, it has been suggested that even that diagnosis was too severe. The Express reports that the winger has suffered ‘no knee or ligament damage.’

While this doesn’t mean he’s suddenly clear to return to action, it should make the recovery process straightforward. It’s apparently just case of allowing the still considerable swelling around Jones’ knee to go down.

The report goes on to claim that it could yet be up to a month before the winger is in ‘prime condition’ once more. Yet, he would be suspended for most of the fixtures during that period anyway.

Based on this updated timeline, it looks like he could be in contention for the trip to face Young Boys in the Europa League group stages on 3 October.

However, that’s not to say that when he is fit, Jones will find it easy to get back into the side. Before the weekend, he had made a relatively impressive start to life at Ibrox, but Ryan Kent is now back on the scene and is likely to slot straight into the vacant left-wing slot.

What’s more, another summer signing, Brandon Barker, should have an opportunity to stake his claim this month, with the Northern Ireland international on the sidelines.

The injury news may be continually becoming more positive, but Jones’ situation is still far from ideal and he must take a large portion of the blame for it.
