Rangers handed injury boost as key player “expected” to be fit for Hearts

Rangers have been handed a major injury boost as Leon Balogun is expected to be fit for the visit of Hearts despite limping off for Nigeria during the international break.

Balogun, 33, was subbed off with 15 minutes to go in the Super Eagle’s 2-0 win over the Central African Republic after opening the scoring for his nation.

But whilst Gers fans have been nervously awaiting the outcome of any potential injury to the centre back – with Filip Helander currently ruled out to December – there’s been some good news today.

Leading Scottish football journalist Jordan Campbell has claimed that the ex-Brighton centre-back is expected to be fit for the visit of the second place Jambos this coming weekend.

“Leon Balogun is expected to be fit for Hearts after his injury scare on Sunday but it highlighted the shortage at CB currently,” tweets the Athletic journalist.

Rangers injury boost timely amid problems at centre-back

The news that Balogun is expected to be fit for Saturday comes as a timely boost for Rangers who have got issues at centre-back.

The Gers have struggled to get a consistent squad to pick from all season with the defence amongst the biggest sufferers of Covid-19 and injury issues.

Connor Goldson’s streak of Rangers appearances was broken earlier in the campaign whilst Filip Helander was forced into surgery which will keep him out until December.

Fourth choice centre-back Jack Simpson remains an uncertain choice in defence and is unregistered in European football with Calvin Bassey forced to deputise in the Europa League against Sparta Prague.

Balogun has actually been one of the only constants in the position this season and his commitment to the cause has been cementing his reputation amongst supporters.

With Hearts one point behind Rangers ahead of the Ibrox clash this weekend, fans will be reassured with Leon’s presence in the squad.

However, if the club’s defensive woes continue to deepen then perhaps the Gers might urge on Ibrox youngster to tread a path once walked by an ex-Liverpool star.
