Rangers have been dealt a significant injury blow ahead of Saturday’s clash with Aberdeen at Ibrox, but one important player may return to the fold [Rangers FC Twitter].

Speaking during a press conference on Friday morning, Steven Gerrard effectively ruled Borna Barisic out of the fixture.

In a possible boost, though, Scott Arfield could return to the matchday squad.

“Arfield is training this morning, an outside chance for Saturday,” said the Gers boss [Rangers FC Twitter]. “Barisic is unlikely to feature.”

Barisic has been a near ever-present in the Premiership this season, making 33 starts, but he missed Wednesday evening’s 3-0 win over Livingston due to a niggle and clearly hasn’t made sufficient progress in the short time that’s passed since then.

Usual backup option Calvin Bassey is suspended and therefore, Joe Aribo is likely to continue to fill in at left-back.

Arfield has missed the last three matches with an injury of his own and particularly given the shortage of options at the manager’s disposal right now, it’d be a big boost if he comes through Friday training and makes the matchday squad.

The Canada international was hugely influential over the first half of the season and although injuries have disrupted his 2021, he’s still made a whopping 44 appearances in all competitions, scoring seven goals and notching six assists.
