Steven Gerrard has hinted at a double injury blow for Rangers ahead of Saturday’s fixture against Celtic with Joe Aribo and Kemar Roofe both likely to miss the match [Rangers FC Twitter].
Aribo has been out for over two months with an ankle injury, while Roofe has been missing since picking up a calf problem in the Europa League qualifier against Lincoln Red Imps in mid-September.
It had previously been hoped that after benefitting from the time afforded by the international break, both players would be fit enough to take a spot on the bench at Parkhead.
However, speaking on Friday morning, Gerrard hinted that they were likely to miss out on the squad.
“We are still assessing the International players who have arrived,” he said, as quoted by Rangers FC Twitter. “We won’t have a full update on the International boys until later today.”
“Joe Aribo and Roofe are really close but this game may be a little bit too soon for them to return.”
Rangers boss Steven Gerrard hints at double injury blow for Celtic clash – Verdict
In an ideal world, the Gers boss would have his entire squad available heading into such a big fixture.
Aribo was a standout performer in pre-season and over the opening weeks of the campaign, while Roofe was brought in this summer to add quality to the starting XI. Therefore, it will be disappointing for supporters if neither player features in the first Old Firm of 2020.
However, Rangers have coped well with their absence so far, pulling off a big win over Galatasaray prior to the international break as they remain unbeaten this season.
As long as those who were away on international duty show up well in training today, Gerrard will still have plenty of quality at his disposal and a squad that’s very capable of taking three points from the game.
