Rangers manager Steven Gerrard has provided an injury update ahead of Sunday’s Scottish League Cup semi-final against Hearts at Hampden, as quoted by the Official Rangers Twitter.

Going into the game, the Gers camp have a number of players battling for fitness including Borna Barisic and Allan McGregor.

Barisic has played 12 games on the bounce after impressing against Feyenoord in September but hobbled off in Dingwall on Wednesday night, after receiving a blow to the foot.

Meanwhile, Allan McGregor missed the midweek game altogether due to a minor knock.

Encouragingly, though, it looks as though both players will be fit enough to feature this weekend.

“No new problems from Ross County, Borna got a kick but he is fine,” said Gerrard, as quoted by the Official Rangers Twitter. “Allan McGregor is improving, he will do a light session and we will see how he is. He has a good chance.”

Verdict

It’s crucial that Rangers get both of these star performers out on the Hampden turf on Sunday.

Barisic has been one of the most impressive players in the squad over the last month and a half, providing defensive solidity as well as attacking threat down the left flank.

His back-up, Jon Flanagan, has spent a considerable amount of time out injured, while the third cab off the rank, Andy Halliday, isn’t a natural full-back.

Meanwhile, while Wes Foderingham is an excellent no.2 for the Gers to have at their disposal, McGregor is a level above.

The veteran has excelled since returning to the club in 2018, and his presence in between the sticks tends to fill the defence with confidence.
