Steven Gerrard will want to get to six points and a position of strength before a double-header against Portuguese giants Benfica and so a strong XI will be named at Ibrox.

UEFA have a strict limit on squad sizes, with Jermain Defoe, Jordan Jones and George Edmundson all missing out on the player list for the group stages and therefore unavailable for the game.

However, 12 substitutes are permitted for each match, creating room for young homegrown players in the matchday squad.

In Belgium, uncapped 16-year-old, Leon King, was named on the bench.

The young centre-back reportedly snubbed the likes of Manchester City and Liverpool [Daily Record] to sign professional terms with the Gers in March and Gerrard is keeping him close to the action.

King trained with the first team once again prior to Thursday night’s match, but this time, he was joined by two more uncapped Academy starlets – Brian Kinnear and Ciaran Dickson.

Kinnear is a 19-year-old goalkeeper who spent time on loan with Camelon Juniors last season before impressing in a Glasgow Cup draw with Celtic in February.

Dickson, 18, is a promising midfielder who scored a late equaliser in that youth Old Firm fixture.

The Scotland U19 international was an integral part of the Rangers U20s and Colts sides who impressed in the UEFA Youth League and the Challenge Cup respectively last season.

Bongani Zungu is set to come into the matchday squad for the first time on Thursday night, but there could still be one spot up for grabs on the bench with King, Kinnear, Dickson, and Jamie Barjonas battling it out for the nod.
