Borussia Dortmund star Emre Can is set to miss tonight’s Europa League knockout round playoff first leg against Rangers due to suspension.

Can is a highly-decorated player who has won trophies at multiple clubs as well as 37 caps for Germany.

The 28-year-old broke into the Bayern Munich first-team setup in 2012/13 when they won multiple competitions, was a losing finalist in the Champions League whilst at Liverpool and then won two Serie A titles with Juventus.

He won the DFB-Pokal with Dortmund last season and played regularly across all competitions, but injuries have held him back in this campaign.

Dortmund star suspended for Rangers clash

Can has only made 16 appearances to date and he isn’t in contention to feature against the Gers.

The Frankfurt-born midfielder was sent off in Dortmund’s penultimate Champions League Group C fixture at Sporting CP.

He was given a straight red card half an hour after coming on as a substitute and the German giants went on to lose 3-1.

Can missed the final group match at home against Besiktas and on Wednesday, Dortmund manager Marco Rose confirmed he is also unable to face the Gers.

Can not the only absentee for hosts

It’s a boost for Rangers that Dortmund will be without such an experienced and versatile player.

But it’s even better news that Erling Haaland is ‘not an option’ for the match, according to Rose [Football Scotland].

Both Haaland and Gio Reyna – who had been a doubt due to illness – trained on Wednesday, but only the latter is in contention to feature.

Rangers’ defence no doubt breathed a collective sigh of relief when that update filtered through, given that the towering striker has scored 23 goals in 20 appearances across all competitions this season.

Meanwhile, an untried teenager was spotted taking part in Rangers’ final training session on Wednesday.
