Rangers fans have heaped praise on matchwinner Scott Arfield for his brilliant pitchside gesture following the 3-2 win over Standard Liege at Ibrox.

The Gers came from behind twice to defeat the Belgian club, with Connor Goldson and James Taverner (penalty) netting in the first half, before Arfield’s decisive first-time finish in the 63rd minute.

The result secured the club’s place in the Round of 32 with a game to spare, while the Ibrox side remain in pole position to win Group D ahead of their final fixture away to Lech Poznan next week.

Arfield was mainly restricted to substitute appearances at the start of the season but he received a run in the side following injuries to Ryan Jack and Joe Aribo and hasn’t looked back since.

The midfielder is on an outstanding run in front of goal, too, with his strike in this one his fourth in his last five appearances.

After putting the Gers in front for the first time in the game, he raced towards the corner flag and celebrated with his trademark salute.

When the club announced the goal on Twitter with a GIF featuring the player’s celebration, over 100 supporters commented and the post received over 5000 likes.

One of those to respond was a young fan wearing the full home kit and copying the celebration.

After the game, Rangers replied directly to that tweet, with a video shot pitchside in which Arfield thanks the girl for her support and salutes back to her.

It was a classy gesture following a big European win and supporters praised both the player and the club for going to the trouble.
