New Rangers manager Giovanni van Bronckhorst praised Alfredo Morelos after his brace secured the Gers a crucial 2-0 Europa League win over Sparta Prague at Ibrox [BT Sport].

Morelos swept a cool first-time finish into the bottom left corner in the 15th minute to put the Gers in front and then accepted a gift from Sparta centre-back Filip Panak in the early stages of the second half to extend the hosts’ advantage.

With Brondby losing to Lyon in Denmark, the two-goal margin of victory was enough to secure second spot in Group A.

It was a good response from Morelos after his lacklustre showing in Sunday’s dismal League Cup semi-final defeat to Hibernian at Hampden.

GvB swerved a question about the Colombia international during his first press conference as manager but he was prepared to speak about him after his first game in charge.

“I think he did really well,” he said [BT Sport]. “We know he’s a striker who can create danger.”

“I wanted him to play more towards the box. Sometimes, he has a thing about going deep into midfield, but as you see, with the wingers that we have we should always create chances with crosses and we have to have bodies in the box.

“I think he did very well and scored some good goals.”

Plenty of Rangers fans were hoping that GvB would deploy Morelos as a more traditional no.9 and there was evidence of a shift against Sparta.

The 25-year-old is at his best when he’s rolling defenders and getting on the end of crosses and if he stays higher up the pitch for longer in games, there’s more chance of him hurting the opposition.

GvB also labelled another Rangers star ‘incredible’ during his post-match interview.
