Rangers are set to be front and centre at the Borussia Dortmund celebrations for their 1000th game in the world famous Westfalenstadion.
Now known as the Signal Iduna Park, the visit of Rangers in the Europa League will prove an apt occasion for the German club and stadium to reach this famous landmark.
As a result of the occasion, Borussia Dortmund are planning a range of special celebrations to mark what should be a wonderful event for both clubs.
Germany’s largest stadium, the world-renowned ground has a standing/seated capacity of 81,365 and a seated capacity of 65,829.
The 24,454 capacity Südtribüne (South Bank) is the single largest terrace for standing spectators in Europe.
Famous for the atmosphere, the south terrace has been nicknamed Die Gelbe Wand, or “The Yellow Wall”.
Rangers to play in 1000th game Dortmund stadium the Westfalenstadion
First opened in April 1974 and part-funded by the German government ahead of the 1974 World Cup in the country, Dortmund were a second-tier club at the time and the first game was a league clash against Bayer 05 Uerdingen, with the match ending 0-0.
Fast forward almost 50 years to 2022 and 1000 games later BVB are set to welcome Rangers to the famous stadium for the third time.
Remarkably, Dortmund’s first game in the European Cup at the Westfalenstadion came against Rangers in 1982.
“In Glasgow in 1966, Borussia Dortmund became the first German football club to win the European Cup,” reads a Dortmund statement.
“In 1982, BVB played its first European Cup game in the Westfalenstadion against Glasgow Rangers – one of almost 1,000 competitive games in this stadium.
“The Scottish record champions are expected to celebrate their anniversary on February 17th.”
Heading into the hotly anticipated tie, Rangers have also been boosted by a major injury update coming out of Borussia Dortmund.
