The Borussia Dortmund sporting director has responded amid speculation surrounding a January move for Erling Braut Haaland which would see him miss the Europa League clash with Rangers in February.

Rangers have drawn the Bundesliga giants in a stunning Europa League knockout round glamour tie with the prize of a place in the last 16 going to the victors.

But the Champions League drop-outs are very aware of near-perpetual interest in their star Norwegian forward who is amongst the hottest properties in football

Erling Braut Haaland, 21, has an explosive record at Borussia Dortmund despite his young age with the likes of Man City, Man Utd, PSG, Real Madrid and Barcelona all extensively linked.

But whilst all the talk from agent Mino Raiola pointed towards a summer move – where the ex-Salzburg striker’s release clause falls to £64m – some fans are worried a move could be completed in the upcoming winter window.

This was after Erling Braut Haaland was seen waving to Borussia Dortmund fans after their 3-2 defeat to Hertha Berlin, a damaging loss which leaves them trailing Bayern Munich by 9 points.

German football has now stopped for a winter break and the Bundesliga won’t return until the 7th of January, prompting rumours of a farewell.

Dortmund director address Erling Braut Haaland speculation ahead of Rangers clash

Borussia Dortmund sporting director Michael Zorc admitted after the match that the waving did look a little “strange” but claimed Erling Haaland explained it was a nothing incident.

“I saw the pictures afterwards too. It looked a bit strange, but I don’t think it was a deliberate action,” said Zorc [Daily Mail].

“I spoke to him again briefly, and that’s not an issue in the team either. ‘What is this?’ I asked him. ‘Nothing at all’, he said. That settles the matter.'”

But Rangers fans eager to see Erling Haaland at Ibrox in 2022 shouldn’t be counting their chickens just yet amid claims of legitimate Real Madrid interest.

“All I know is Real Madrid are very interested in him. I could name 25 others now, but with Real I know for sure,” Dortmund chief executive Hans-Joachim Watzke told BILD.

“I think he would fit in better in Spain. A different kind of football is played in England. I am not so sceptical that he will stay with us.”

Rangers are set to play Dortmund at the Westfalenstadion on the 17th of February with the return clash scheduled for Ibrox on the 24th.

Dortmund manager Marco Rose has also been speaking ahead of the tie and talked up the Rangers support.
