Alfredo Morelos: Rangers star joins ex-Atletico Madrid hero on elite Europa League list

Alfredo Morelos scored twice in Rangers’ 2-0 win over Sparta Prague on Thursday night to ensure a spot in the Europa League play-off round after Christmas for the Ibrox side.

What was even more impressive about the Colombian’s two goals is that they moved him into the top five in the Europa League all-time goalscoring chart.

Morelos has now scored 30 goals in the Europa League (formerly known as the UEFA Cup) including qualifying and sits in fifth position, a fantastic achievement for the 25-year-old.

He joins an illustrious list that includes ex-Atletico Madrid and current Rayo Vallecano star Radamel Falcao, as well as Aritz Aduriz, Klaas-Jan Huntelaar, and Henrik Larsson.

Larsson leads the way on 40 goals, but there should be ample opportunities for Alfredo Morelos to break this record.

He has scored 26 of his 30 goals for Rangers and the other four for HJK Helsinki in 2016/17, the season before he moved to Glasgow.

His most prolific campaign in Europe came during the 2019/20 season where he scored an incredible 14 goals as Rangers made the last 16, losing to Bayer Leverkusen.

In the first few matches of this season’s group stage, the Ibrox side missed Morelos’ cutting edge as we were beaten by Lyon and Sparta Prague.

However, that all changed last night as Giovanni van Bronckhorst got a response from the striker following a couple of poor recent performances.

Don’t be surprised to see Morelos eventually shatter the record, he only has 11 goals to go.

Morelos wasn’t the only player who starred against Sparta, with GvB labelling another player ‘incredible’.
