Sheyi Ojo started with a bang but ultimately disappointed at Rangers

Sheyi Ojo tweeted a farewell message on Twitter on Thursday evening, signalling his imminent departure from Rangers and return to parent club, Liverpool.

There was plenty of optimism amongst Gers fans when the young winger joined the club on a season-long loan deal in June 2019.

His early form was impressive, too.

Ojo scored three goals and registered two assists in Europa League qualifying and scored on the second weekend of the Premiership season in a 6-1 hammering of Hibernian.

A month later, he enjoyed his finest moment in a Rangers jersey. His rasping left-footed strike from long-range during the first half of the Europa League clash against Feyenoord sent Ibrox wild, with the goal earning his adopted side three precious points from their opening group stage fixture.

That was to be the last time he would score for the club, though.

Ojo continued to receive plenty of opportunities up until the winter break but the clinical finishing and creativity which had built up so much hope during his first few months in Glasgow were now nowhere to be seen.

The 22-year-old’s poor decision-making in the final third and occasional reluctance to track back in defence became increasing sources of frustration for the Ibrox faithful.

Aside from a lively cameo at Braga in the Europa League Round of 32, Ojo continued to flatter to deceive in 2020 with Steven Gerrard losing patience and often leaving the loanee out of the matchday squad entirely.

After that strike against Feyenoord, the former England youth international went 24 games without a goal, registering just three assists in that time.

What had started off so promisingly had petered out into a disappointing spell and therefore, it was little surprise that no permanent deal was tabled.

Just like Ovie Ejaria before him, Ojo’s move didn’t work out and now the fifth loan spell of his career is at an end.

He has the comfort of a long-term contract at Liverpool to fall back on, but he returns to Anfield with little prospect of featuring for the first team.
