Scott Arfield has done everything he can to warrant a contract extension over the past few weeks.
An impressive performance in his first league start against Motherwell was followed up by then a standout showing in Rangers’ defeat to Hibs.
With the Canadian’s current contract expiring this summer, and with plenty feeling he still has enough to give to the side, it’s a surprise that nothing has been resolved yet.
Arfield was one of only two players who could arguably say they received pass marks in the League Cup semi-final defeat to Hibs. The other is Joe Aribo.
The midfielder is a constant menace on the pitch and always wants to be involved. Many others shied away against the capital side, but Arfield obviously treated this as an audition in front of the incoming manager.
This could give van Bronckhorst a major headache when it comes to contract renewals. There are some decisions that may be easier than others for the incoming manager, however, I reckon he will have plenty of food for thought when it comes to Arfield.
The midfielder has been a key member of the squad since joining in the summer of 2018, although he hasn’t featured as much as he would have liked this campaign.
Arfield still proves his worth when he does play, it was no coincidence that our finest domestic performance of the season occurred when Arfield started.
The Dutchman will have plenty of major decisions to make as he starts his new role, and after his recent performances, Arfield will have given him some food for thought.
Meanwhile, Rangers fans have thanked a departing coach.
