A rare outing for Rangers winger Brandon Barker against Hamilton Accies on Wednesday night suggests Steven Gerrard still has some faith in the former Manchester City youngster.

A previous winner of City’s Academy Player of the Year award, the 23-year-old’s transfer came a little out of the blue, and he hasn’t yet made much of an impact.

Prior to the midweek clash against Accies, he had made just 11 appearances for the club, while he hadn’t featured in any of the previous 12 fixtures.

An apparent lack of confidence in possession and an absence of tangible contributions, with just one goal and no assists to date, explain his place on the peripheries of the squad.

However, his inclusion against Hamilton suggests Gerrard still believes he can get something out of the winger.

He was named on the bench ahead of Jordan Jones, Sheyi Ojo and Jake Hastie, and was introduced for the final 15 minutes in place of the injured James Tavernier.

The Englishman was unable to make an impact as the Gers went on to suffer an embarrassing home defeat.

His first involvement in over a month and a half may give him encouragement that his season isn’t over just yet, though.

Barker is one of many players who have it all to prove over the coming months if they are to stay at Ibrox beyond the summer, but if Wednesday night is anything to go by, more opportunities may be in the offing.
