A host of Rangers players have headed off for international duty this week but in a development that’s likely to please Steven Gerrard, Scott Arfield isn’t one of them.

Arfield has been in inspired form over the early part of the season and he opened the scoring at Ibrox on Sunday afternoon as the Gers hammered Hamilton 8-0.

In October, Gerrard said that the 32-year-old “thankfully doesn’t go on international duty anymore” [RangersTV], in an apparent hint that he had walked away from Canada duty.

However, it appears that the midfielder’s recent lack of involvement at international level is due to a lack of fixtures more than anything else, with the former Burnley star suggesting last month that he was still available for selection [RangersTV].

He was expecting an update in the form of a squad announcement for a pair of World Cup Qualifiers against Aruba and Suriname which were scheduled for Saturday 14th and Tuesday 17th November respectively.

Yet, both of those fixtures have been postponed and pushed back until March 2021 [Canadasoccer.com].

The result is that Arfield will be able to put his feet up for a few days this week, which can only be beneficial to Rangers.

At 32, Arfield isn’t quite a veteran just yet, but with Steven Davis, Ryan Jack, Glen Kamara, Bongani Zungu and Joe Aribo all heading away on international duty, the manager will likely be delighted to be able to guarantee that at least one of his midfield options will be fresh ahead of the home fixture against Aberdeen on 22nd November.
