Contract radio silence suggests Rangers attacker set to leave Ibrox at end of season

A lack of updates provided by Rangers suggests that striker Jermain Defoe, whose current contract expires in a matter of months, is set to leave Ibrox at the end of the season.

Defoe joined the Gers on an initial 18-month loan deal from Bournemouth in January 2019 and fell in love with the club, signing a one-year deal that kicked in after the loan expired.

He’s made 66 appearances in all competitions since his arrival, scoring 29 goals and notching ten assists.

His numbers are strong and that won’t be a surprise to anyone who has watched him over the course of his 21-year professional career.

However, he’s struggled for playing time this season, with Steven Gerrard also having Alfredo Morelos, Kemar Roofe and Cedric Itten as no.9 options.

Defoe has only made four starts to date, none of which have come since the turn of the year, and it looks as though his time at the club is nearing an end.

Fellow veteran Steven Davis signed a contract extension at the weekend, while Gerrard has also spoken on several occasions about the potential for Allan McGregor [Glasgow Times] and Leon Balogun [Scottish Sun] to extend their deals.

There’s been much less discussion surrounding Defoe’s future though, and with the end of the campaign approaching, it’s looking increasingly like this will be his last at the club.

The 38-year-old may well decide to continue playing.

He has picked up a few injuries during his time at Ibrox but nothing too serious and he’s still razor-sharp in the box.

Yet, at this point, it would be a big surprise if an offer was tabled by the Gers for him to stay.

A key Rangers midfielder says he has opened contract negotiations with the club, though.
