Opinion: Rangers should look at the team of 2010/11 for inspiration following Celtic defeat

Rangers’ defeat to Celtic in midweek hurt, it really hurt. It wasn’t even the fact we were defeated that was the issue, Celtic was due a win and fair play to them, but it was the way we were picked apart in the opening 45 minutes that was the problem.

It was reminiscent of a pre-Gerrard performance against our bitter rivals, one that showed no courage, fight, or any heart whatsoever.

Luckily, it was just one match, yes Celtic may be top of the Scottish Premiership now but it’s only a one-point gap, and in any title race, there are plenty of twists and turns along the way.

Rangers can take solace that a similar situation occurred in Walter Smiths final season

Although there were very few positives to take from the match, there was one little nugget of information that stood out.

In Walter Smith’s final season in charge of the club, Rangers were comprehensively beaten 3-0 by Celtic away from home in what was a terrible performance.

That result moved them eight points clear with 12 matches left, although we did have two matches in hand.

Some thought the title race was close to being over, but in their very next match, Celtic went to Motherwell and were defeated 2-0 to ensure the race for the title was far from over. Rangers won 12 out of their next 14 matches and famously won the league on the last day of the season, giving Smith a perfect send-off.

Football is a funny old game as they say, and nothing can be written off following the woeful performance in midweek. As long as the players rebound and put it to the back of their minds.

All focus should be on beating Hearts at Ibrox tomorrow and getting back to winning ways following dropped points in our last two league matches.

Let’s hope Gio and the rest of the team can get it right and give the fans something to cheer about.

In other news, returning Rangers striker Alfredo Morelos can spark some life into the Ibrox side as he is likely to play against Hearts.
