The Telegraph reports that Ross Wilson has resigned from his role as Director of Football Operations at Southampton, paving the way for his switch to Rangers.

The Scottish Sun claimed on Saturday night that the 35-year-old had agreed to join the Gers as the club’s new Director of Football. It was suggested that the appointment could be announced as early as Monday, and this development means the club are clear to go public.

Wilson is highly respected for the work he’s done so far in the British game during stints with Falkirk, Watford and Huddersfield Town before joining the Saints.

He turned down this role in 2017 [BBC Sport], but following two years of service from Mark Allen, he’s clearly decided now is the right time to take the plunge.

The Telegraph report claims that the University of Strathclyde graduate will be ‘tasked with raising the standards across the club: in recruitment, scouting, academy, medical and training ground infrastructure.’

What the majority of Rangers fans will likely be most interested in, though, is Wilson’s prowess in the transfer market.

As the man who brought Virgil van Dijk to St Mary’s before selling him on for £75 million [The Telegraph], it’s fair to say he has some history of successful talent spotting.

Some Bears were delighted when the club entered discussions last week, and it’ll be intriguing to see what changes he makes once he gets his foot in the door at Ibrox.
