Steven Gerrard handed out praise to Borna Barisic after Tuesday evening’s win over St Joseph’s in Gibraltar, as quoted by the Daily Record.
After a frustrating first half, the Croatian international played a big part in opening up the opposition in the second period.
It was his cross that found Ryan Jack to volley home the opener. Then, after Sheyi Ojo had doubled the advantage, Barisic put the game and the tie out of sight with a well-taken free-kick.
With just over ten minutes remaining, Alfredo Morelos made it four. A comfortable first outing then, with the manager content both with the scoreline and the performance.
He singled out Barisic as a star performer and was even relaxed enough to roast Connor Goldson at the same time.
“I was also pleased with Borna Barisic, although Goldson must be on a decent goal bonus because he was claiming the third goal,” said Gerrard, as quoted by the Daily Record. “Borna came into the team and squad at a difficult time last season and he’s had his injuries along the way, but he has looked strong from the get go this season, in a better place physically and mentally.”
“Hopefully he can build on this performance and the goal should do his confidence the world of good. It was a clear two feet over the line – I don’t like tap-ins either, I like the goals that look better!”
Barisic cut a much more confident figure in Gibraltar than the one who cost the Gers two goals in the final game of the 2018/19 SPL season at Kilmarnock.
Given his injury problems and lack of form last season, many fans claimed they had seen enough.
However, after strong international performances for Croatia, he seems to have rediscovered his mojo.
With Jon Flanagan out for the next few weeks with injury, the 26-year-old has a chance to nail down the left-back spot. Let’s hope he can now find consistency, after an encouraging first display.
