After Rangers added one more player to their squad on Deadline Day, Steven Gerrard addressed the media on the topic of transfers, as captured by RangersTV.
Glen Kamara had already signed a pre-contract agreement with the club. Yesterday, though, that was brought forward.
He trained for the first time today, after signing a four-and-a-half year contract.

The arrival of the Finland international capped off a busy month, with multiple new arrivals and several loan departures.

Balance is key

During Friday’s press conference, the manager explained the rational behind Rangers’ dealings.
“What we’re trying to do is find the right balance”, Gerrard said, via RangersTV.
“We obviously need players that are ready now. To deliver and help us now to get results. But, also the recruitment’s got one eye on the future as well and trying to bring assets into the club…on good deals…and we can give them that platform to grow and perform.”
Gerrard then went on to single out Jermain Defoe and Steven Davis as two experienced heads who could contribute at a high level straight away.
By contrast, he identified Kamara and Nikola Katic as example of players who need time to develop.

This certainly seems a sensible approach.
Mistakes have been made in the past, spending big on unproven players.
It seems as though lessons have been learned, though.

The fans rightly demand success in the here and now and personnel have been added in order to try to deliver silverware.
Yet, there is no recklessness.
Over the last two windows, Rangers have shown their ambition, but also, a sense of perspective.
