Steven Gerrard emphasises standards after Rangers beat Marseille

Steven Gerrard has spoken to RangersTV following Sunday’s win over Marseille.
It was an extremely impressive showing at Ibrox with the Gers sweeping aside the French heavyweights 4-0.
Daniel Candeias notched a brace, while Connor Goldson and Jermain Defoe also found the net.

The opposition boasted technically gifted players such as Dimitri Payet and Florian Thauvin, but it was Gerrard’s men who shone on the day.
Yet, the manager isn’t about to let his squad rest on their laurels.
“It was a good test for us at the right time, and we are hoping more, high-quality opposition like that are going to roll into Ibrox if we go on a European run,” Gerrard told RangersTV. “So it was a great test for us and we have passed it with flying colours. I thought we were really, really good across the board.”
“It is pleasing for the fans to see the evidence out there on the pitch of the standards we are trying to drive. We’ll be all over the players again on Tuesday – they’ll have a down day tomorrow, and we will be all over them again standards-wise.
“We are representing Rangers, and the standards here for many, many years have been top, top drawer. For us to be successful and achieve things together, it is important I keep pushing alongside my staff to keep that hunger and that consistency among the lads.
“We believe the quality is in the dressing room and now it is over to them. We’ll keep pushing them.”

Verdict

These are reassuring comments from Gerrard that most Bears will enjoy.
The 25,000-odd fans who turned out yesterday will have left Ibrox thoroughly satisfied. They witnessed a really strong performance as their team continues to progress under the ex-Liverpool man’s management.
Yet, there’s no sense in getting carried away. This is pre-season after all.
It’s great to see the standard of football this squad is now capable of producing when everything clicks. Gerrard is as aware as anybody though, that it’s about showing consistency across the entirety of a season.
That’s what was missing last term and what is required in order to deliver a 55th Scottish top-flight title.
