Scott Arfield discussed Rangers’ trophy ambitions and dropped a hint about his future in an interview with Sky Sports.
The Canadian international has been in fantastic form recently, bringing reported interest from Southampton [Daily Mail]. After a tactical switch from Steven Gerrard, he scored in a win over Hearts at Ibrox, before netting a first career hat-trick against Motherwell.
Therefore, he now has ten goals and six assists in the league this season.
Nonetheless, with five games remaining, silverware is beyond the squad’s reach. It’s something Arfield knows isn’t acceptable.
“The fact of the matter is we came away with no trophies this season, which is a disappointment for this club”, the 30-year-old told Sky Sports.
“When you come through these doors you need to win trophies and that’s how you’re going to be judged.”
However, Arfield went on to hint at a lengthy stay at Ibrox. Despite the reported interest from elsewhere, it seems he’s focused on seeing out his deal at Ibrox, which ends in the summer of 2022.
“I’ve got a four-year contract”, he continued.
“I’ve got three left at the end of this and people can judge me at the end of that. But, I know I’ll have some trophies.”
Contracts don’t mean what they used to in football, anymore.
For example, Alfredo Morelos is technically tied to the club until 2023, but he’s unlikely to stay at Ibrox beyond next season.
It seems Arfield is committed to his deal though, and that can only be good news for Bears.
He’s been in excellent form recently, and may just have found his most effective position as he bids to help bring success back to Ibrox.
